Isaac Azot of Fish on First said on Wednesday () that Dylan Head, a promising outfielder, will undergo a season-out surgery. He is known to have a thigh injury.
Head is expected to resume baseball activities in three months, but the minor leagues are effectively out of the season because the regular season ends in mid or late September.
Head, who is 19 this year, sent Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres and was traded along with Ko Woo-suk.
After playing in three games immediately after the trade, he went on the injured list and played in two games after his return.
He hit .237/.317/.366 in 104 at-bats in San Diego Single A before the trade.
MLBCOM ranked Head as the fifth most promising player in Miami.
Miami also named left-hander Kent Emanuel (DFA). Instead, it called up right-hander Yoni Chirinos.
Miami called up Emanuel after transferring Sean Anderson, who ousted Ko from the 40-man roster, just one day after the call-up. However, Emanuel was also named in just three days.
Emanuel, 32, was a third-round pick of the Houston Astros in 2013. He made his big league debut in 2021, recording a 2.55 ERA in 10 multi-inning relief appearances. However, his strikeout rate was only 19.1 percent and he allowed four home runs.
In November of that year, Houston also nominated Emanuel. The Philadelphia Phillies took him to claim.
Emanuel spent the 2022 season in the Phillies" minor league system. Injured, he made just 13 starts.
After being completely removed from the roster by Philadelphia during the offseason, he signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. After posting a 6.19 ERA in 20 Triple-A games (13 starts), he became a free agent.
Emanuel signed a minor league contract with Miami ahead of this season, going back and forth between the big leagues and the minor leagues three times.
Emanuel, who has exhausted all minor options, is likely to become an FA.
